Northeast Seminole Heights Neighborhood Watch

Welcome to the neighborhood

Neighborhood Watch (NESH NW) is a crime-watch group for the section of Old Seminole Heights called Northeast Seminole Heights (formerly Evelyn City) that was created in 1975 to help deter crime on Nebraska Avenue.

Our boundaries are the Hillsborough River to the north, I-275 to the west, Sligh Avenue to the south and 22nd Avenue to the east.

What we do
Northeast Seminole Heights (NESH) facilitates programs that promote the safety and growth of the neighborhood in order to better the quality of life for neighborhood residents. We are not an HOA, therefore we do not govern our community in any capacity. We are neighborhood residents that have been selected/volunteered to serve on this committee -- which was formed for taking a more active role in submitting community needs, concerns and events to our residents, the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County.

Safety
Neighborhood Watch: The safety of residents and visitors is a top priority for NESH and the community. We are an active participant in the Neighborhood Watch program. Our nation is built on the strength of our citizens. Every day we encounter situations calling upon us to be the eyes and ears of law enforcement. Not only does neighborhood watch allow citizens to help in the fight against crime, it is also an opportunity for communities to bond through service. The Neighborhood Watch Program draws upon the compassion of average citizens, asking them to lend their neighbors a hand. Our Tampa Police Department and Neighborhood Watch liaison is Christie Hess.

Neighborhood Enhancement:
We work in partnership with the City of Tampa to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living and working environment. We desire to improve the quality of our neighborhood through education, enforcement and abatement; as well as respond to community concerns and attain code compliance while continually seeking innovations. Our objective is to ensure the effective and efficient enforcement of codes which address property maintenance standards along with the timely removal of litter, illegal dumping, graffiti removal, and appropriate alleyway clean ups. Our Neighborhood Enhancement liaison is Susan Long.

Hurricane and Tropical Storm preparedness: In conjunction with the City of Tampa we will provide updates in evacuation routes and assist our neighbors in mitigation strategies and resources. More info to follow.

Engagement
NESH Welcome Committee: Welcoming new neighbors to ensure their transition to NESH is comfortable and provide an opportunity to get familiar with our community from the start. We deliver welcome packets for new residents, which includes coupons to local businesses and information about the city that new residents may find useful. We need your help in notifying us of new neighbors.

Our Welcoming Committee is headed up by Susan Elbare. Please contact Susan at: [email protected]

LITTER Clean Ups:
Litter remains a huge problem in and around our community. The litter we see on the streets flows into our storm sewers and eventually ends up in our Hillsborough River. Directly effecting the habitat of our endangered Manatees and other wildlife -- not to mention the long term effects of the petrochemicals they will slowly release for hundreds of years. We organize two different clean ups 4 – 6x per year on both Sligh Ave and Nebraska Ave in conjunction with Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful. In addition to the street clean-ups, we also coordinate Hillsborough river cleanups with the City of Tampa and our Friends at the Landings of Tampa. We are always looking for more volunteers and can provide all the essential tools, even kayaks if needed.

Our Litter clean up leaders are as follows: Sligh Ave Cleanup: Sue Hamerstrom [email protected] and [email protected] Nebraska Ave Cleanup: David Gamez [email protected] Hillsborough River Cleanup: Ryan Nadeau [email protected]

ECHO (Evelyn City Helping Others)
Prior to our area being known as Northeast Seminole Heights it was called Evelyn City. ECHO is a group of neighbors that can provide assistance to the elderly or disabled in our community that may be unable to perform the necessary maintenance of their property. We also will be working in conjunction with Paint your Heart Out Tampa to provide a one day volunteer effort to pain the homes of residences in our community. More Info to come…

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteering is a great way to get connected to your community! NESH facilitates year-round volunteer opportunities. Click here to register with our volunteer database!

Events
Meetings: Every other month or as necessary, NESH hosts meetings at various locations in our community to provide updates on events and news specific to our neighborhood. These meetings include updates from the Tampa Police department, Neighborhood Enhancement and guest speakers with topics that directly affect our community. We encourage you to join us and participate.
For more information please contact Rod Hatch at [email protected]

Picnics: Twice per year we will host neighborhood picnics at Patterson Park. Typically Spring and Fall where we will have games, raffles and guest speakers. Neighbors bring a covered dish to showcase their kitchen skills or simply bring something from a local restaurant or deli. We typically hold this Picnic at Patterson Park. Look for more information coming up.

For more information please contact one of our Picnic Committee members Jeni Armbruster at [email protected],  Liz Baker at [email protected], Tessa Kramer at [email protected]

Progressive Holiday Dinner
This has been a Holiday Tradition in NESH for many years. What better way to connect than over food and cocktails — with short walks or bike rides between each dinner course? Our own Christie Hess has been organizing this event for years and we can’t thank her enough! The event is held the First Friday in December. RSVPs are required

In a progressive dinner, you “progress” through the meal, from course to course, from house to house, changing locations and hosts with each course. To help keep costs down, please bring a dish to share for one of the courses and BYOB. This popular event is limited to the residents of NESH. Interested in Hosting a Course?
